Abstract

As energy demands are increasing, due mainly to population growth, it is very important to concentrate on the development of clean energy such as biogas. The objective was to verify whether Jerivá bark (syagrus romanzoffiana) can be used as a filter for the reduction of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in biogas generated in biodigesters. For this the Jerivá bark was ground and carbonized; With posterior characterization of the material by the nitrogen physisorption (N2), X-ray diffractometry, termogravimetric analysis, immediate analysis (Determination of moisture content, determination of volatile matter content, determination of the content of Determination of fixed carbon content) and methylene blue tests. The experimental design was completely randomized, with eight treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of the collection of H2S content in the biogas without filter (control), iron mesh filter without iron impregnation (adsorbed) from the commercial company ERBR-Bioenergy, and with the filters formed by Jerívá charcoal, commercial activated Charcoal Alphacarbo® and expansive clay; with and without iron impregnation (adsorbed). It was concluded that the Alphacarbo® carbon filter was the most effective in the removal of hydrogen sulfide from the biogas, and the Jeriva filter staying in an intermediate position between the treatments.
