Population ageing constitutes one of the most significant social transformations of contemporary society and heightens the need to develop policies and spaces that ensure older persons the continued exercise of their rights, including the right to education. The research problem that gave rise to this study is: what changes do participants recognize in their lives and associate with their participation in Universities Open to the Third Age, through lifelong education, particularly with regard to empowerment and social inclusion? To address this question, the general objective of the study is to analyze Universities Open to the Third Age as spaces in which the human right to lifelong education is materialized, seeking to understand the changes recognized by participants and associated with their participation in these programs, particularly in relation to empowerment and social inclusion. The research was conducted at three state public universities in the state of Paraná, Brazil: the State University of Ponta Grossa (UATI/UEPG), the Western Paraná State University, Foz do Iguaçu Campus (UNATI/UNIOESTE), and the State University of the Midwest, in Guarapuava (UNATI/UNICENTRO). The investigation was guided by the perspective of historical-dialectical materialism and adopted a mixed-methods approach, predominantly qualitative, with an exploratory, descriptive, and interpretive character, configured as a multiple case study and employing Bardin’s content analysis. The thesis defended in this research is that lifelong education, understood as a human right and materialized through Universities Open to the Third Age, is relevant and may contribute to improvements in the lives of older persons in terms of empowerment and social inclusion, considering the concrete conditions of access, retention, and participation, as well as the limitations of each institutional context. The results showed that participation in UATI/UNATI programs is associated by participants with the continuation of learning, the creation and strengthening of social bonds, a sense of belonging, recognition of their own capabilities, autonomy, social participation, and the resumption or continuation of life projects. Social inclusion was found to be related to dimensions that go beyond social interaction, encompassing recognition, circulation through social spaces, access to information, and participation, while empowerment was associated with expanded choices, greater understanding of rights, autonomy, and agency. The particularities identified across the three institutions demonstrate that these repercussions take different forms according to participants’ trajectories and institutional contexts. It is concluded that lifelong education, understood as a human right, may find concrete spaces for its materialization in UATI/UNATI programs and may foster processes of empowerment and social inclusion among older persons. This potential, however, depends on conditions of access, retention, funding, and institutional continuity. The findings correspond to the repercussions recognized by the participants and do not allow for the establishment of causal relationships or statistical generalizations.
