This thesis investigates the contradictions present in the Clube Curitibano Magazine (1890–1912), analyzing its role in consolidating an elitist educational project and in promoting the invisibility of Black education in the state of Paraná. The study aims, as its general objective, to identify and discuss how the discourses conveyed by the periodical, strongly linked to Symbolism, contributed to legitimizing an exclusionary erudite culture. As specific objectives, the research contextualizes the emergence of the press in Brazil and in Paraná, analyzes the contents published in the magazine, and investigates the use of Symbolism as a strategy for social and cultural distinction. The research adopts the perspective of historical-dialectical materialism as its theoretical and methodological foundation, allowing the press to be understood as a space of ideological dispute and reproduction of social relations. This study is documentary and bibliographic in nature, using the issues of the Clube Curitibano Magazine as the primary source. Data analysis is conducted through the identification of recurring themes, discourses, and editorial silences related to education and the presence of the Black population. The results demonstrate that the magazine functioned as an instrument of cultural affirmation for Curitiba’s elite, disseminating Europeanized values and promoting an ideal of intellectual formation restricted to specific social groups. The investigation reveals that, although the periodical presented itself as a promoter of culture and education, its contents systematically omitted discussions regarding educational access for the Black population, reinforcing inequalities inherited from the post-abolition period. It is concluded that the Clube Curitibano Magazine played a significant role in maintaining selective education and in naturalizing processes of social exclusion. The study contributes to expanding the understanding of the role of the press in shaping educational discourses and highlights how cultural and literary practices participated in the consolidation of historical inequalities that still resonate in contemporary society.
