Abstract

The objective of this study was to compare the results of pain, catastrophizing, and functionality scales between hospitalized and community-dwelling older adults. This is a retrospective observational study that included 198 participants over the age of 60, of both sexes, divided into two groups: active elderly individuals in the community (GA) and hospitalized elderly individuals (GH). Sociodemographic aspects were investigated, and assessments of functionality and pain were applied using the Clinical-Functional Vulnerability Index (IVCF-20), the Catastrophic Thoughts about Pain Scale (EPCD), and the Geriatric Pain Measure-P8 (GPM-P8). The results showed that hospitalized elderly individuals presented greater frailty and pain intensity, with higher catastrophizing scores when compared to the active group. These variables demonstrated an effect of loss of functionality, which was more relevant in the GH group. In addition, there was less adherence to physical activity, which was also related to functional disability. The findings of this research reinforce the influence of physical and emotional factors on the pain experience, leading to impairments in the functionality of the elderly, highlighting the need for interventions aimed at reducing catastrophizing and encouraging physical activity to prevent functional decline and seek to reduce the number of hospitalizations in this population.
