Abstract

The municipality of Jaguariaíva, Paraná state, South of Brazil, lay partly on the Second Plateau of Paraná, in the Campos Gerais phytogeographic domain, and partly on the First Plateau of Paraná, with the Devonian Escarpment as a remarkable topographic boundary. This context between two large geological-geomorphological domains of the state, located on the eastern edge of the Paraná Sedimentary Basin and on the rocks of the Paranaense Shield, leads to a special geodiversity. Geodiversity is the source of different raw materials and, mainly, a way to access the history about planet Earth. Constraints in the replication of knowledge and the lack of understanding of its importance makes it at risk due to a range of high-impact human activities. This work deals with a sequential application of two stages of geoconservation in Jaguariaíva, the inventory and quantification of the local geological heritage of exceptional didactic value, as a support for Earth Science teaching and geoconservation initiatives. These steps resulted in 30 (thirty) representative geosites of the municipality geodiversity. Each geosite was described, mapped and evaluated regarding the risk of degradation and its didactic potential. With this evaluation, it was found that geosites with high didactic value are close to the urban area and are already being used by teachers of Basic Education. Important geosites that are at high risk of degradation need urgent measures for effective protection. Two teaching materials were prepared, a geodidactic map of the municipality and a kit with a set of rock samples and fossil casts, which can be used in formal education, aiming to bring both the students close and sensible with the local geodiversity. It is hoped that this work can support future actions for the teaching of geodiversity in Jaguariaíva.
