Abstract

The production of non-biodegradable plastics has increased significantly, due to high consumption, low cost and market demand. The disposal of this plastic waste becomes a major environmental problem, due their natural resistance to degradation. Starch represents a potential replacement by biodegradable materials. Antioxidants and antimicrobial components can be used to obtain active biodegradable packaging, which is an alternative to reduce the production of plastics with the ability to provide an increase in shelf-life. The aim of this work was to produce a biodegradable starch- based material containing dried blackberry residue (DBR). A characterization of DBR was carried out and the mechanical, thermal, structural and barrier properties of the biodegradable materials were determined, as well as their antioxidant properties and phenolic compounds content. The ABTS•+ method showed IC50 of 1.64 and by DPPH• a result of 36.05 for DBR. Considering the biodegradable materials, the increase in the proportion of DBR resulted in denser materials, with lower water vapor permeability and less water solubility. A scanning electron microscopy (FEG- SEM) analysis indicated that Control samples surface (RSA0) showed continuous and smooth characteristics, without pores, cracks or irregularities. With the inclusion of DBR, the surface of the material became more heterogeneous, increasing the roughness with higher DBR proportions, changing the regularity and homogeneity of the polymeric matrix. The phenolic content of the biodegradable materials increased in higher concentrations and time in aqueous medium, resulting in a maximum value of 38.47 ± 10.68 mg EAG.g-1 for 48 hours of immersion in the sample with greater DBR (RSA10). The inclusion of dried blackberry residue produced biodegradable materials with promising properties, which may represent an alternative to the replacement of commercial plastic in food packaging.
