Abstract

This dissertation investigates how amorous representations take place in the photonovels of marriage in the 1960s, with the object of study being the Big Hotel magazine. The relevance of developing this study is centered on the question that the extent to which the marriage representation of amorous relationships in the photonovelas comes close to certain behaviors and thoughts from an era and also how the images converge or diverge with the narratives and dialogues of the photonovelas. To this end, we communicate that the photonovels were a form of popular literature, composed of a language coming from cinema, photography and comic books, and that it underwent adaptations in the processes of appropriation of its European production. So, we understand that the photonovela is a hybrid cultural product. The content of the novels is focused on the theme of marriage, exposing questions from the universes of passions, loves, as well as promises of consolidating “perfect love”. The applied research method was content analysis, with reference to the studies by Laurence Bardin. For the image analysis of the photonovelas we rely on the studies of Ulpiano Toledo Bezerra de Meneses and on the theoretical and methodological framework of Ana Maria Mauad. Based on the knowledge about the production, circulation and consumption of this magazine, we problematized some interviews with readers and analyzed the cartoons, columns, product announcements, tests and novels in the context of the time. We signal that the magazine is based on a construction that shows the simulacrum (Jean Baudrillard). It can be treated as a manual of female behavior, bringing up the social imaginary about the representation of social roles played in man-woman relationships.
