Abstract
Intracranial pressure monitoring is essential in neurocritical care, but its costs and risks are not negligible. Recent research has developed a noninvasive method of monitoring the morphology of the intracranial pressure curve composed of an electri-cal resistance strain gauge capable of capturing small bone deformations of the skull. This study aims to show the applicability of this method of monitoring and to make correlations between the values found with values of invasive ICP and clinical data. This is a series of cases with a secondary analysis that included critical patients con-secutively admitted with invasive monitoring of intracranial pressure. Noninvasive monitoring was performed concomitantly with the invasive method. The values ob-tained through the noninvasive monitoring were expressed by the P2 / P1 ratio, which is obtained through the analysis of the ICP waveform morphology and is an indication of the cerebral complacency. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to calculate the correlation. A total of nine simultaneous analyzes of the intracranial pressure curves (n = 9) were performed. Mean intracranial pressure ranged from 1 to 20 mmHg, with a mean of 11.23 mmHg (SD +/- 5,15, n = 9). The non-invasively measured P2 / P1 ratio ranged from 0.52 to 1.21, with a mean of 0.92 (SD +/- 0.22, n = 9). There was no significant correlation between the mean values of intracranial pressure and the P2 / P1 ratio. The noninvasive method of monitoring the morpholo-gy of intracranial pressure curves is safe and easy to apply. More studies are needed to define its relationship with the absolute values of intracranial pressure.
