Abstract
This academic master's thesis aimed to analyze the representations of African and
Afro-Brazilian history by elementary school students. The students participating in the
research are from a school linked to the Regional Education Center of Guarapuava-
Pr, in a city with 3,936 inhabitants and are in the 9th year of Elementary School. Based
on law 10,639/2003, which makes the teaching of African and Afro-Brazilian history
mandatory in Brazil, a questionnaire was prepared with thirteen questions, open and
closed, with the aim of questioning what representations on the subject the students
have. The concept of representation discussed by historian Roger Chartier proved to
be a guide to problematize the responses, understanding that such representations are
not made as neutral discourses, but rather the result of different influences, whether
political or of another nature. Research that puts subjects/students in the spotlight is
increasingly present in History Teaching, therefore this dissertation is part of the
problematic investigations emerging in the area. Decolonial studies and History
Didactics are necessary because they question the construction of certain narratives
constructed from the perspective of Eurocentrism and colonialism. Conclusively, some
positive points are highlighted in the responses, however, many stereotypical views
about Africa, which were part of the schooling process in Brazil, are still present in the
students' narratives, which is one of the most relevant aspects.
