dc.description.abstractCan the use of 3D X-ray micro-computed tomography (CT) and image analysis contribute to characterizing the structure of porous media and provide information for computer simulation of water retention properties in porous media? To answer this research problem, this study proposed three chapters (papers) in which, in each of them, parts of the research problem are addressed and, in the end, the interrelationship between the results made it possible to verify the robustness of the hypothesis that the 3D CT technique and image analysis would be suitable for characterizing the structure of porous media and capable of providing information for the computer simulation of water retention properties in porous media. In this way, Chapter 2, using 3D image analysis, characterized the structure of porous media obtained by the 3D CT technique and its relationship with water retention characteristics through the retention curve. Chapters 3 and 4 presented the Young-Laplace method (YLM) and simulated the retention curve from 3D images of porous media using the YLM. One of the advantages of accessing retention information for porous media by combining image analysis and computer simulation techniques is in terms of time consumption, given the slowness it takes to obtain a retention curve in the laboratory. From the point of view of computer simulation, although there are other methods, the YLM is a lightweight (in terms of computational load), accessible option (code under GNU GPLv3 license) that finds the necessary information in the input geometry (structure of the porous medium) to determine the equilibrium distributions between the phases (solid, liquid and gaseous).pt_BR
dc.description.resumoA utilização da técnica de microtomografia computadorizada de raios X (CT) 3D e análise de imagem podem contribuir para a caracterização da estrutura de meios porosos e fornecer informações para simulação computacional de propriedades de retenção de água em meios porosos? Para responder a este problema de pesquisa, este estudo propôs três capítulos (artigos) em que, em cada um deles, são abordados partes do problema de pesquisa e ao final, a inter-relação entre os resultados possibilitou verificar a robustez da hipótese de que a técnica da CT 3D e análise de imagens seriam adequadas para a caracterização da estrutura de meios porosos e capazes de fornecer informações para a simulação computacional de propriedades de retenção de água em meios porosos. Desta forma, no capítulo 2 utilizando a análise de imagem 3D, caracterizou-se a estrutura de meios porosos obtidas pela técnica da CT 3D e suas relações com as características de retenção de água através da curva de retenção. Nos capítulos 3 e 4, apresentou-se o método de Young-Laplace (YLM) e simulou-se a curva de retenção a partir das imagens 3D dos meios porosos utilizando o YLM. Uma das vantagens em acessar informações de retenção de meios porosos pela associação das técnicas de análise de imagem e simulação computacional é em termos de tempo de aquisição, visto a morosidade para a obtenção de uma curva de retenção em laboratório. Do ponto de vista da simulação computacional, embora existam outros métodos, o YLM se apresenta como uma opção leve (em termos de carga computacional), acessível (código sob licença GNU GPLv3), e que encontra na geometria de entrada (estrutura do meio poroso) as informações necessárias para que as distribuições de equilíbrio entre as fases (sólida, líquida e gasosa) possam ser determinadas.pt_BR
