Um olhar para a branquitude nas questões linguíticas da língua

Abstract

Esta pesquisa analisou as ideologias da linguagem implicadas na política de cooficialização da língua polonesa em São Mateus do Sul – PR, articulando questões de branquitude, mercantilização cultural e políticas linguísticas. O estudo passou por uma trajetória de mudança, desde a proposta inicial de valorizar a língua polonesa enquanto patrimônio até a problematização crítica da branquitude, revelando o papel das relações de poder na produção e legitimação de políticas linguísticas. A investigação caracterizou-se pela abordagem qualitativa, com entrevistas semiestruturadas realizadas com 14 participantes, incluindo agentes políticos, agentes educacionais, agentes dos serviços do município e agentes institucionais. Os dados foram gerados mediante consentimento informado, gravados em áudio e posteriormente transcritos, seguindo procedimentos interpretativos orientados por Fraser e Gondim (2004). A diversidade de perfis permitiu compreender diferentes perspectivas sobre a implementação da lei de cooficialização da língua polonesa e seus efeitos sociais, econômicos e culturais. Os resultados evidenciam que essa lei não se configura como instrumento de revitalização linguística efetiva, mas como mecanismo simbólico de mercantilização linguístico-cultural, beneficiando principalmente comerciantes e empresários da região central da cidade, e não os falantes da língua polonesa, residentes especialmente na zona rural. A implementação da lei enfrenta barreiras estruturais, como custos educacionais e limitações do legislativo, resultando em sua caracterização como “lei de gaveta”. Além disso, a análise revelou como a branquitude e ideologias da linguagem a ela relacionadas influenciam a valorização de certas línguas em detrimento de outras, evidenciando hierarquias raciais e econômicas na construção de políticas linguísticas locais. Este estudo contribui para os debates acadêmicos sobre políticas linguísticas, ideologias da linguagem e branquitude, demonstrando que a análise da língua não se limita a aspectos comunicativos, mas reflete relações de poder, privilégios e desigualdades estruturais. Ademais, evidencia a necessidade de pesquisas futuras que questionem consensos estabelecidos, rompam pactos de privilégio e promovam olhares críticos e plurais sobre a linguagem, a cultura e a sociedade.This study examined the language ideologies underlying the policy of granting coofficial status to the Polish language in São Mateus do Sul, Paraná, Brazil, by articulating issues of whiteness, cultural commodification, and language policy. The research underwent a process of theoretical and analytical transformation, shifting from its initial proposal of valuing the Polish language as cultural heritage to a critical examination of whiteness, thereby revealing the role of power relations in the production and legitimization of language policies. The study adopted a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews conducted with 14 participants, including political actors, educational professionals, municipal public service employees, and institutional representatives. Data were generated through informed consent, audio-recorded, and subsequently transcribed, following interpretive procedures proposed by Fraser and Gondim (2004). The diversity of participants made it possible to understand different perspectives on the implementation of the law granting co-official status to the Polish language, as well as its social, economic, and cultural impacts.The findings indicate that the law does not function as an effective instrument for language revitalization but rather as a symbolic mechanism of linguistic and cultural commodification, primarily benefiting merchants and business owners located in the city's central area rather than Polish speakers, who predominantly reside in rural communities. The implementation of the law faces structural barriers, including educational costs and legislative limitations, resulting in its characterization as a "law on the books" that has not been effectively put into practice. Furthermore, the analysis revealed how whiteness and the language ideologies associated with it shape the valorization of certain languages over others, highlighting racial and economic hierarchies in the construction of local language policies. This study contributes to academic debates on language policy, language ideologies, and whiteness by demonstrating that the analysis of language extends beyond communicative aspects to reflect power relations, privilege, and structural inequalities. Moreover, it underscores the need for future research that challenges established consensuses, disrupts systems of privilege, and promotes critical and plural perspectives on language, culture, and society.
