Abstract
The production of written texts that meet socially established requirements is one of the aspects involved in the development of discursive competence. However, the linguistic performance of Brazilian students in the written modality has been poor. Given this finding, this study aims to identify what are the main difficulties of textual production of elementary school students. To this end, in the first semester of 2018, five classes from the 6th to the 9th grade were elected from a public school in Santa Catarina and, in this universe, 34 text productions and interviews with two teachers and 12 students were generated, which are analyzed in the light of contemporary studies on language and the teaching of written textual production, based on theorists such as Bakhtin (2010, 2011), Geraldi (1997, 2012), Antunes (2003, 2009), Passarelli (2012) and Hoffmann ( 1993, 1995), in addition to the support in official documents guiding teaching in Brazil. Initially, the text production proposals and the teachers' reports on the issue under study are analyzed. This information is then related to the data obtained in the interviews with the students and in their text productions, mobilizing the theoretical basis of the work to examine the field research data. From this analysis, the main difficulties of the students are identified as: not having what to say due to the lack of previous activity on the subject; not knowing for whom, for what and how to say because there is no definition of the genre of the text to be produced; failure to comply with the planning, proofreading, and rewriting stages of the text by performing the activity just outside the class, without follow-up in each of the steps; not devoting the time and effort required to write the text; and not receiving a procedural assessment of the text. Thus, the results indicate that the difficulties of textual production of students derive, in some way, from the lack or insufficiency of time and effort in the various stages of the process, elements that are essential for writing a good text.
