Os monges (bons) rebeldes: um estudo sobre a identidade monástica na Abadia da Ressurreição de Ponta Grossa (PR)

Abstract

The objective of this work is to understand how the monks of the Abadia da Ressurreição, located in Ponta Grossa (PR), constructed their monastic identity. It is a Benedictine monastery that was founded in 1981 by a group composed mainly of postulants, that is, people who had not yet taken their perpetual monastic vows. These young people were led by the only monk in the group, called D. Lucas Torrel de Almeida Costa, who had influences that could be considered progressive, which would have marked the identity of this monastery to this day, causing these monks to be called “(good) rebels”. Using the theoretical framework of New Cultural History, highlighting historians Roger Chartier and Michel de Certeau, we propose an analysis of the representation and practices present in this Monastery, which were published in official documents (called “monastic projects”) and on the YouTube channel belonging to the Abbey of the Resurrection. On this channel, the monks publish information, interviews, fragments of religious rites, as well as publicizing their monastery and their daily lives. Thus, this research aims to shed light on the evolution of monastic identity at Resurrection Abbey and how it is communicated to the public through contemporary media.
